Tips For Choosing Your First Medicinal Cannabis

Posted on: 13 September 2017

Medical cannabis is extremely helpful when it comes to treating certain types of illnesses and reducing pain in individuals who have chronic discomfort issues. If you have recently asked your doctor about using it and have not yet taken the plunge, then there are a few things that can help you with taking the cannabis for the first time:

Pick Your Strain Carefully

One of the first things you will need to do when purchasing your cannabis is to choose the strain that you desire carefully. The different types of cannabis are referred to as the strains, and there are several "main" varieties that will be available to you. In each of these main varieties, there will be many sub-varieties. You want to look at the main type of strain first, since each strain will be suited to treat a different kind of ailment. For example, the Indica strain is ideal for treating chronic pain conditions. While this is true, the third category of cannabis, called hybrids, can be specifically produced to treat certain ailments since they are plants that are a combination of different Sativa and Indica strains.

If you are having a hard time figuring out which cannabis variety is right for you, you can speak with a professional at the dispensary where you purchase your marijuana. You can also start with an Indica strain. This type of marijuana is typically consumed for relaxation, so it is a good starting point if you are unsure about the strain that is right for your ailment.

Look At The THC Level

The THC level in the strain of marijuana that you purchase will determine the psychoactive effects that you feel when you consume it. The higher the level of THC, the more you will feel. If you want to prevent a bad experience as you first start taking medical marijuana, then ask about products with low levels of THC. You will want to look for something that has a higher level of cannabidiol. This is a relaxing compound that can counteract the anxiety that you may feel due to the THC.

In general, you can choose your marijuana based on the amount of THC that is in each strain and this information is provided by the dispensary. The information will be listed in the number of milligrams per gram of cannabis. You will want something that is closer to about 30 grams. You will find some strains with five times or more this amount, so be careful.
