Things To Ask Your Parents About Before Your First Chiropractic Assessment

Posted on: 27 July 2017

When you attend your first assessment with a chiropractor because you're suffering from back pain, he or she will commonly ask you a number of questions about your health history. Generally, you'll be able to answer the majority of them yourself. For example, this back health experience will want to know if you've ever been in a car accident or had another serious incident that could be a root cause of your back pain. However, there may be some questions that you aren't able to answer and for which you'll need help from your parents. In order to provide as much information as possible during the assessment, check with your parents about these topics in advance.

Family Members With Arthritis

Although there are several potential causes for arthritis, you have a higher risk of suffering from this painful condition if family members have also suffered from arthritis. You may know if your parents have had arthritis, but you might not know about this condition's presence among other family members. Generally, your parents should be able to tell you if arthritis is prevalent in your family history so that you can share this information with your chiropractor during your initial assessment.

Complications During Your Birth

You might not ever think about a link between your back pain and your birth, but it's possible that your chiropractor will ask you questions about this topic. This is likely something that you'll need to get a refresher on from your parents. For example, if your back has an unnatural twist and you haven't been in a car accident or experienced another trauma of this nature, your chiropractor may wonder if you had a difficult birth — perhaps the doctor delivering you had to use forceps, for example.

Childhood Injuries

While you'll know if you've been in a car accident or suffered a bad fall as an adult, you won't necessarily have a full picture on any injuries that you might have suffered as a child. In some cases, something that might have seemed inconsequential at the time could have tweaked your back and led to an imbalance in your body. Over time, this imbalance could have worsened to the point at which you're now experiencing back pain. Ask your parents about any childhood injuries that you may have suffered. For example, perhaps you had a hard fall out of a tree or off a horse or perhaps you were injured in youth football.
